Middlesbrough, the largest town within the Borough of Middlesbrough, is a Unitary Authority within North Yorkshire. Previously located within Teeside until its amalgamation with Cleveland, it was then part of Cleveland until its abolition in 1996. The Middlesbrough district takes in the neighbouring areas of Grangetown, Eston, Normanby, Ormesby and South Bank.

Only a few miles from the North York Moors, the town is surrounded by miles of outstandingly beautiful countryside. The long stretches of sandy beaches on the Tees Estuary have an impressive seal colony and the river sees thousands of migrating sea trout and salmon passing through it every year.
The town has an interesting arts heritage which includes the Empire Palace of Varieties in the town centre. This was designed by Ernest Runtz in 1897 and is the finest remaining theatre structure in the country.
In its time as a music hall, Lillie Langtry was the first star to tread its boards. Today the building has been transformed into a nightclub.
